Actually, USB 2.0 should work just fine if that's what your camera uses. Firewire is faster, especially the newer 400 and 800 firewire technologies, but USB 2.0 will get the job done, albeit slower.
Since you don't say what operating system you are using, allow me to mention what I'm having a problem with. Perhaps this may help you in some small way. A year or so ago I bought a new Sony DCR-HC96 camera at the same time that I ordered a new Dell desktop because my current desktop wasn't quite powerful enough for decent video editing. Sadly, my new desktop came with Vista and Vista refuses to recognize my camera and of course Sony has no plans to develop Vista compatible drivers for this camera. My older XP desktop recognizes the camera just fine but doesn't have quite enough power to edit video. This is a common problem with Vista.
I tell you all of this to suggest that, if you are running Vista, perhaps it may be a Vista compatibility issue. I'm actually installing Service Pack 1 for Vista right now (as I type this on my older desktop) and I'm hoping (praying) that the driver dilemma will be fixed. I'll let you know what I come up with. I'd also be very interested in finding out how you make out on your issue.
Good luck and let us know.
Since seeing your post I got worried because I just purchased a new core 2 quad Q6700 64 bit vista machine. I just installed Ulead video studio 11.5 plus, hooked up my firewire and hard drive. I used my older Sony VX2000 and had no problem capturing a AV file from it. I'm pretty sure its older than a HC96 but worked fine.
All the Mini dv camcorders Ive ever used use a firewire for video but a usb would work for pictures. Maybe its a Dell thing ? ...I use HP.
Microsoft would be in a heap of trouble if Vista wouldn't recognize an older mini dv camcorder. Ive seen stranger things though ! ...LOL
